CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility

At DES we are committed to supporting both our local communities and the communities in which we work and we make contributions through charitable donations, volunteering and our employment and training opportunities.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility policy is aligned with our vision and core values, and demonstrates the acknowledgement of our role in the environments and communities in which we work.

We comply with all applicable laws, regulations and employment standards wherever we operate, and engage openly with our stakeholders.

Each year we select a number of charities for DES to support and we take pride in raising the awareness of worthwhile causes and promoting fundraising activities such as sporting events, cake sales, quiz nights and charity functions.

Act 4 Africa

Act 4 Africa is a charity aimed at providing health and education services to empower women in Uganda, promote gender equality and help them to become financially astute and economically independent.

Act4Africa have just built ‘Cathys Centre’ which will provide vulnerable women and children in the district with a kindergarten, youth club, and community education centre with HIV testing & counselling facilities.

They provide livestock such as goats and pigs to the women to provide them with a sustainable living to support them and their families. A goat will cost around £120 but provides the women with a living forever.

Chestnut Tree House Childrens Hospice

Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for East and West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and South East Hampshire and cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-shortening conditions.

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities is a charity that provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation at specialist children’s hospitals across the UK, enabling families to stay close to their child whilst they are in hospital and maintain a degree of normal family life. They provide vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families who are unfortunate enough to need hospital care. Their core programs are Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles providing access to health care and enable family-centered care helping to lessen the burden for more than 5.5 million families in 2016.

How DES have helped………here are just a few examples.

DES participated in helping the DIY SOS team turn a run-down, ransacked building on Newton Drive, Blackpool into a young carers centre for the Blackpool Carers charity.

The transformation of the house enabled the charity to build a better future for carers of all ages as it will double as an administrative base too.

DES supplied labour for the duration of the build for the Blackpool Carers Centre, Beaverbrooks House as part of BBC One special episode DIY SOS: Children in Need Special.

It was a pleasure to be part of something that helps a local charity that provides support and enhances lives of unpaid carers of all ages throughout Blackpool and The Fylde Coast.

Ronald McDonald House Charity Golf Tournament

DES was proud to be a silver sponsor and support the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) Golf Tournament held at the London Golf Club.

This year’s event saw a great turnout, with over 80 golfers tackling the superb Heritage Course at the London Golf Club in the wonderful sunshine. The golf was followed by a superb evening of excellent food, great speeches and eagerly awaited trophy presentations.

DES was well represented in the golf with Bill Dugdale (Founder – DES), Sean Egan (MD – DES), Ian Brough (Pre Con Director – DES) and James Murphy (Willmott Dixon) taking on the challenging but very scenic course.

This event was the largest by far and raised an amazing £17,000 which will help to fund the four Ronald McDonald Houses in London. It was a pleasure to be a part of a great event for such a worthwhile cause.

World Food Day at Ronald McDonald House

DES supported Ronald McDonald House Guy’s and St Thomas’ for World Food Day. We contributed with Willmott Dixon’s collection of non-perishable food items to the residents of the Ronald McDonald House.

DES recently received a lovely ‘Thank you’ message from the Ronald McDonald House Guy’s and St Thomas’; ‘Many of our families spend every possible minute they can with their sick child in hospital, so thinking about what to buy for dinner is not their top priority. This is why we are so grateful that you took the time to donate food items to our House as your act of kindness really made a difference to families who need our support.’

It is heart-warming to know how our contribution to such an amazing cause hasn’t gone unrecognised and has benefited to those who need it the most.

As well as our main charities we also take pride in supporting key initiatives like the MacMillan Coffee Morning and Text Santa.

Annual MacMillan Coffee Morning

DES hosted their very own annual MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday 29th September at our main office in Poulton-le-Fylde. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is MacMillan’s largest fundraising event for people facing or touched by cancer. We feel as though this morning is an amazing opportunity for all our employees in our office and on-site to get together for a great cause.

We collectively raised an astounding £544.70. The money we have raised can pay for the hire of a room for a year so a cancer self-help and support group could hold regular meetings to support people affected by cancer in their community.

The Coffee Morning was a success as all employees participated in not just the eating but donating and sharing their baking techniques. There was a wide selection of cakes ranging from Oreo cheesecake to banoffee pie. The best masterpiece of all had to be Tyger Kevill’s Coffee and Walnut Cake in the shape of a cable drum.

DES would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone as the money we raised will help MacMillan make sure no one faces cancer alone.
